Emeritus Professor and former Department Chair
Charles Wallschlaeger received the [Educator
Award] from the Industrial Design Society
of America (IDSA) this year at the IDSA National
Conference in San Francisco. The award recognizes
significant and distinguished contributions to
the field of industrial design and ID education.
Wallschlaeger was on the faculty of the Department
of Design for over 30 years, and served 19 years
as the Chair of the Department. He oversaw the
development of the Department as a separate division
and then a department in 1968 and 1972 respectively,
and was instrumental in its current structure
as an undergraduate and graduate program with
the three areas of Industrial, Interior and Visual
Communications. He published a seminal design
foundations book, [Basic
Visual Concepts and Principles] in 1992,
and it remains as the most widely used foundations
book for students in the design fields. Wallschlaeger
joins Emeritus Professor and Chair Joe
Koncelik, and current Professor and Eminent Scholar
Noel Mayo as recipients of this prestigious award.

OSU Department of Design graduate Chris Calori
(BS 74, MA 80) recently published the definitive
reference book for the design of environmental
graphics, Signage and Wayfinding
Design: A Complete Guide to Creating Environmental
Graphic Design Systems (John Wiley & Sons,
Inc). The book is available from the publisher
(Wiley), Amazon,
or Barnes
and Noble.
Calori is a principal of Calori & Vanden-Eynden
/Design Consultants, an internationally recognized,
award-wining design firm specializing in the planning
and design of signage and wayfinding programs.
She is a member of the Society for Environmental
Graphic Design and is a Professional Affiliate
of the New York Chapter of the American Institute
of Architects. (Her partner David Vanden-Eynden
is also a 1974 Design graduate.) According to Ivan
Chermayeff from Chermayeff & Geismar, writing
in the forward to Calori's book:
The meticulous specification
of all the elements going into the making of
signage to meet the reality of each situation,
to stay in balance, finding the best point
between the most basic adequacy at one extreme
and the performance of refined and sophisticated
excellence in design terms at the other end
of the spectrum, is what Calori & Vanden-Eynden
consistently deliver time and time again.
Calori and Vanden-Eynden have also recently been
elected Fellows of the Society for Environmental
Graphic Design (SEGD). The SEGD Board annually
conveys the title of Fellow to distinguished individuals
who have made extraordinary contributions to the
SEGD and who have achieved excellence in the profession.
Chris and Dave are honored to join the 24 distinguished
designers who have been named Fellows of the SEGD
since 1987.

Two significant initiatives led by the Office of University Relations will
officially launch the week of Monday (5/16). The first involves
Visual Identity Guidelines which provide information and tools to
allow communicators to contribute to a more consistent identity for the
university, including a transition to a "reversed" Ohio State logo
and
standardization for units' identification in relationship to that logo.
Related to that is the launch of a new system of Web pages to replace
the university's current front door. Reflecting new minimal design
elements, the home page and associated pages provide users more
timely and tailored news, features, events and links. Graduate student Jerry
Dannemiller was significantly involved with these efforts.
